Srinagar: While there has been no forecast of any major weather activity, the night temperature has improved across the Valley on Tuesday, but continued to settle below freezing point.
Director Meteorological department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told reporters here that the minimum temperature has recorded a slight improvement due to weak Western Disturbance (WD).
Earlier, the Meteorological Department had predicted light rains and snowfall from December 12 to December 12 under the influence of a weak western disturbance affecting J&K.
However, the MeT director said that dry and cold weather would most likely continue till 21st December over most places of J&K with possibility of brief spell of very light snow at isolated extreme higher reaches of north & north eastern parts of Kashmir during the night of December 16.
From December 21, the 40-day harshest winter period, known as Chilai-kalan will commence, which culminates on January 29 every year. Chillai-Kalan is followed by 20-day long Chillai Khurd.
Pertinently, under the influence of a feeble WD, the night temperature improved across Kashmir with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a low of minus 1.5 degree Celsius.
In Qazigund, the mercury settled at minus 2.6 degree Celsius while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.3 degree Celsius.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius.
In Gulmarg, the mercury settled at minus 3.5 degree Celsius while Pahalgam shivered at minus 1.5 degree Celsius.
