Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Police has said that Dy SP Himayun Muzamil Bhat scarified his life in the line of duty on September 12 this year in an encounter in Kokernag areas of Anantnag district and the nation is mourning the loss of the said gallant Officer of Jammu & Kashmir Police on National Police Commemoration Day. Following is a write up issued from Jammu & Kashmir Police Headquarters as a mark of tribute to the Dy SP Himayun Muzamul Bhat :-
It was on the afternoon of September 12th when the news broke that three officers had been seriously injured in an encounter in South Kashmir. This was an unprecedented incident in the 34-year history of fighting militancy.
The police spokesman said based on specific information about the presence of militants in Gadole, Kokernag, a joint operation was launched with the Army on September 12, 2023.
He said the following day, another operation was initiated based on information about a hideout on the slope of a cliff in Gadole. DySP Himayun Bhat volunteered to join the raid cum assault party, which also included CO 19 RR Col Manpreet Singh and Maj Ashish Dhonchak of 19 RR.
“They trekked through challenging terrain diligently, aiming to maintain the element of surprise. The operation party, comprising members of the JKP and the Army, including DySP Himayun Muzzammil Bhat, Col. Manpreet Singh, and Major Ashish Dhonchak, reached very close to the hideout,” he said.
While approaching the hideout, the operation party came under heavy fire, resulting in critical injuries to our officers and a soldier.
Despite being under heavy gunfire, our officers displayed remarkable bravery and led the operation from the front. The wounded officers were evacuated for medical treatment, but sadly, DySP Himayun Muzzammil and the Army officers succumbed to their injuries.
The spokesman said this prolonged encounter, marked by valor and sacrifice, ultimately led to the elimination of two militants, including LeT commander Uzair Khan. The sacrifice of these officers will forever be remembered, and their bravery will be etched in the annals of our nation’s fight against militancy.
Lt. Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at District Police Lines Srinagar, honoring the martyred officer, Himayun Muzzammil.
The grief-stricken family received condolences from various quarters, as the nation mourned the loss of a dedicated officer.
Born on October 21, 1989, Himayun Muzzammil Bhat was the eldest son of retired Inspector General of Police, Ghulam Hassan Bhat. He completed his primary education at Burn Hall School Srinagar and pursued engineering at SSM College of Engineering.
Inspired by his father’s illustrious police career and fueled by a passion for police work, Himayun embarked on his professional journey, joining the State Police Services and being appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police in 2018.
His commitment and hard work were evident during the Basic Induction Course at the Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy in Udhampur.
After completing his probationary period in the challenging district of Srinagar, Himayun was posted in the northern district of Baramulla.
Later, he was transferred to the Police Component in Srinagar, where he not only fulfilled his regular duties but also assumed the additional responsibility of Chief Investigating Officer (CIO). As an Investigating Officer, Himayun’s professionalism was a testament to his analytical acumen and dedication to justice.
In June 2023, Himayun accepted a new challenge when he was posted in South Kashmir as Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Kokernag.
In his short but illustrious career, DySP Himayun Muzzammil Bhat earned accolades for his raw courage and dedication to duty, remembered by his colleagues as a gentle and down-to-earth personality.
He is survived by his parents, younger brother, wife, and an infant baby boy, and his legacy as a selfless and dedicated officer will endure forever.
