KU’s 2-day seminar highlights mathematics’ role in diverse disciplines

Srinagar: To foster a deeper understanding of the pivotal role mathematics plays in various academic and scientific disciplines and to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and pursuit of innovative research avenues, the Department of Mathematics, Kashmir University (KU) Thursday inaugurated a two-day seminar here.
According to a statement issued from Centre for Public Relations University of Kashmir, Srinagar the seminar titled ‘Mathematics and its Role in other Disciplines’ is being organised in collaboration with JK Science Technology and Innovation Council (JKSTIC) bringing together academicians, researchers and students.
Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof Nilofer Khan in her message said that Mathematics is not just a subject confined to classrooms, it is a universal language that transcends borders and disciplines.
“Mathematics plays a pivotal role in fields as varied as physics, engineering, economics, biology and even the arts. The contributions of mathematics are all around us, from the algorithms that power our digital world to the statistical models that inform decision-making,” Prof Khan said. While encouraging the academic community to continue exploring the intersections between mathematics and other disciplines, she said: “These connections hold the key to ground-breaking discoveries and advancements.”
During the inaugural function, Dean Research, KU, Prof Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo highlighted the essence of mathematics and its intricate connections with other branches of science.
He commended the department for organising the event and encouraging participation from students and research scholars across multiple disciplines including physical, chemical and biological sciences.“This is an opportunity for research scholars to leverage mathematical tools to enhance their respective fields of study,” he said.
Head, Department of Mathematics, Prof Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday underlined the significance of Mathematics and its indispensable role in various scientific and technological domains. He said, “Mathematics serves as an invaluable tool underpinning advancements across all areas of science and technology.” He further emphasised on the enrolment of students at school level in terms of opting maths as a subject for their career prospects. He said, “It is the duty of the teachers, parents and civil society to encourage students to opt for mathematics in order to eradicate the phobia related to the subject in Kashmir region. The seminar also featured lectures by two eminent scholars. Former Dean Academic Affairs, KU, Prof M A Sofi shared insights on the unification of different branches of Mathematics, citing compelling examples and proofs that underscored the interconnectedness of mathematical principles. Prof K S Charak, Department of Mathematics, Jammu University elucidated concepts for proving the fundamental theorem of algebra in a manner accessible to high school students, making complex mathematical ideas more comprehensible.
In the last session, research scholars from different institutes presented their research papers. Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, KU Dr Mohammad Abdullah Mir presented the welcome address while Co-organising Secretary, Dr Mohammad Saleem Lone conducted the proceedings of the inaugural session.
