G20 summit concludes after PM Modi hands over presidency gavel to Brazilian president

New Delhi: The 18th G20 summit concluded “successfully” here on Sunday, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the gavel of G20 Presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Addressing the closing session of the G20 summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed to hold a virtual session of G20 in November to review the suggestions and proposals placed during the summit.

“India has the responsibility of the G20 presidency till November. In these two days, you have expressed several views and put forward various proposals. I propose that we hold a virtual session of G20 in November end, where we can review the subjects of this summit”.

“The Brazil’s Presidency will take forward the collective agenda of the G20”, Modi said, “we had a wide-ranging discussion in the One Earth and One Family sessions. I am satisfied that the G-20 has become a platform for optimistic efforts regarding the vision of One Earth, One Family, One Future”.

The Prime Minister said the India’s approach in G20 was at Human Centric Vision instead of GDP Centric Approach.

“India has used the data of the Chandrayaan Mission in the interest of humanity. We have talked about sharing it with everyone. This is also proof of our commitment towards Human Centric Growth” he said.

The Prime Minister expressed happiness that under India’s chairmanship, a strong framework for Digital Public Infrastructure has been agreed upon.

He added that similarly, the “G20 Principles on Harnessing Data for Development” has also been accepted.

On the inclusion of the African Union in the bloc, Modi said it has been decided to launch “Data for Development Capacity Building Initiative” for the development of Global South”.

He also raised the concerns and challenges posed by the crypto currency and called upon the world leaders to develop global standards to regulate crypto-currency.

Prime Minister also spoke about UNSC reform and said, ” The number of permanent members in the UNSC is still the same. Since then, the world has changed a lot in every aspect”.

“Be it transport, communication, health, education, every sector has been transformed. These new realities are part of our new global. This should be reflected in the structure” he added.

Speaking after taking over the G20 presidency from India, President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da congratulated the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “efficiently” leading the G20 bloc and holding “excellent work” in this summit.

He said that the Brazilian presidency of the G20 has three priorities, namely social inclusion and the fight against hunger, energy transition and sustainable development, and the reform of global governance institutions.

The Brazilian President said, “The UN Security Council needs new developing countries as permanent, non-permanent members to regain political strength”.

The final session of the G20 summit, ‘One Future’, concluded at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi.

Later in the day, Modi to hold a working lunch meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

PM will hold a pull-aside meeting with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and will later conduct bilateral meetings with leaders of Comoros, Turkey, UAE, South Korea, EU/EC, Brazil and Nigeria.
