SC reserves verdict on Article 370 case after 16 days of hearing

Srinagar: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its judgment on pleas challenging abrogation of the Article 370 and reorganization of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories.
As per reports the five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant heard the arguments from petitioners and the Government of India for 16 days. The case was dormant for the past three years.
During hearing of the case, senior lawyers Kapil Sibal, Rajeev Dhavan, Gopal Subramanium, Zaffar Shah and several other lawyers represented petitioners challenging August 5,2019 decisions by the Union Government on Kashmir. On behalf of Centre and other intervenors defending abrogation of Article 370, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Harish Salve, Rakesh Dwivedi, Mahesh Jehatmalani and several other lawyers appeared.
On August 5, 2019, the Union Government read down Article 370 and reorganized J&K into two UTs. After abrogation of Article 370 several petitions were filed by political parties and individuals in the Supreme Court against these decisions.
