New Delhi/Cairo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday left for home after concluding his Egypt State Visit, which he termed a “historic one”.

In a tweet, the PM said:

“My visit to Egypt was a historic one. It will add renewed vigour to India-Egypt relations and will benefit the people of our nations. I thank President @AlsisiOfficial, the Government and the people of Egypt for their affection.”

The two-day visit was the PM’s first visit to Egypt, and the first bilateral prime ministerial visit to Egypt from India in over two decades.

PM Modi, who was conferred Egypt’s highest civilian honour the ‘Order of the Nile’ by President El-Sisi, in a tweet expressed his gratitude.

“It is with great humility that I accept the ‘Order of the Nile.’ I thank the Government and people of Egypt for this honour. It indicates the warmth and affection they have towards India and the people of our nation.”

PM Modi, who visited the Great Pyramids of Egypt along with his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly, said the two leaders had a rich discussion on their respective countries’ cultural histories.

“I thank PM Mostafa Madbouly for accompanying me to the Pyramids. We had a rich discussion on the cultural histories of our nations and how to deepen these linkages in the times to come.”

The PM had earlier visited the Heliopolis War Grave cemetery where he paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who died fighting in Egypt and Palestine during the first and second world wars.

In a tweet, he said:

“A tribute to India’s brave soldiers, whose courage will never be forgotten.

“At the Heliopolis War Memorial, I paid homage to our brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the First World War in Egypt.”

Of his visit to the Al-Hakim mosque in Cairo, he posted:

“Honored to visit the historic Al-Hakim Mosque in Cairo. It’s a profound testament to Egypt’s rich heritage and culture.”

The PM was earlier in the US on a three-day State Visit.
