Islam encourages assistance to any person in need, irrespective of gender, religion or social inclinations, especially at critical stages of life, the level of participationin blood donation by communities are not encouraging. Even at the time when the demand rate for blood transfusion keeps on increasing everyday due to factors such as road traffic accidents, intensive and sophisticated surgical operations, longer survival of patients with bleeding disorder, cancers, bleeding disorder during and after deliveries, criminal activities and insurgencies. Thus, there is poor level of blood transfusion in our society. These conditions eventually put the lives of victims at risk and in some instances on minimal chances of survival. This calls for a serious need for blood transfusion to save the life of the victims. Blood donation involves collecting safe blood from a donor so that it can be used to treat and save the life of others. Blood is an actively therapeutic biological, perishable substance obtainable only from healthy human donors. It is an essential part of our health care system, and support immediately in sustaining a community span. Islam as a comprehensive way of life exclusively supports and encourages Muslims to freely assist other persons in need, even donating blood to desired victims. Blood donation is a vital and valuable community service and life-saving intervention that can strengthened the community life span.

“Donating blood is believed to be a safe way to saving one’s life. It is permissible to donate blood, so long as this does not cause any harm when there is need to help others. It is also permissible to establish Islamic blood banks to receive and store blood, to be kept for anyone who may be in need of it, so long as no money is charged to the sick person or the people in charge of his affairs in return for this service”.

No community would survive, where the healthy members do not support their sick ones in order to sustain their life and continual existence. Donating blood is equated with saving life human life is so sacred that Quran provides a scenario in which saving a single soul is akin to saving the entire mankind. Many calamities such as incessant road traffic accidents, natural disasters which include epidemics, insurgencies and other illnesses necessitate hospitals to look for enough blood to cater for the needs of the victims. Donating blood is believed to be a safe way to saving one’s life. It is permissible to donate blood, so long as this does not cause any harm when there is need to help others. It is also permissible to establish Islamic blood banks to receive and store blood, to be kept for anyone who may be in need of it, so long as no money is charged to the sick person or the people in charge of his affairs in return for this service.
