Dear Editor,
The decision by BCCI, the biggest cricket board in the world, to pay both sexes the same international match fee recently was a watershed moment for the empowerment of sportswomen. It is a great step forward for the women’s game and the third such significant move this year toward closing the enormous gender gap that afflicts the sports field globally. It will encourage a lot more girls to pursue professional cricket with the support of their parents. The BCCI’s action is expected to encourage the grooming of numerous additional young females who have aspirations of donning the national jersey. The competitive spirit so fostered should increase the talent pool and produce stronger dream teams that compete for international accolades, popularity, and branding. This could therefore pave the way for top female players to reap rewards in the shape of better endorsements and sponsorships for cricket competitions of all kinds. The board’s decision is timely because our current crop of women cricket players is at their best and peaking.
