NIT Srinagar organizes mega cleanliness drive under Swachhata Pakhwada

Need for joint efforts for the preservation of the environment: Director

Srinagar, : Under the Swachhata Pakhwaada 2022, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar Monday organized a mega cleanliness drive on the campus and vowed to protect the environment from pollution.

The two-week-long Swachhata Pakhwada is being organized by the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) Committee of NIT Srinagar from 1st September 2022 to 15th September 2022 under which many activities were carried away by the organizers.

According to a statement issued from the Public Relations Office of the Institute the Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal along with Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari and Prof. M.F. Wani initiated the mega drive on the campus. In his key speech, Prof. Sehgal highlighted the importance of Swachhata Pakhwada and stated that such programs are need of the hour.

“Our planet is facing multiple crises from climate change to loss of biodiversity and an increase in carbon emissions. We are committed to supporting all pro-environment initiatives on campus,” he said.

Prof. Sehgal discussed various initiatives with the students to make NIT Srinagar a green campus. He also urged students to protect and conserve the environment at the individualistic level. Institute’s Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said that engineers have an important role in society and are called builders of any nation. He laid emphasis on the importance of forests and their role in the environment. “Both engineers and environmentalists can work jointly for a sustainable government. We need joint efforts to preserve the environment,” he said.  He stated that “Charity begins at home” the effect of the Swachh Bharat Mission should be initiated within our campus itself and should be taken along to the next levels.

On the occasion, Prof. MF Wani said there is a need for joint efforts to preserve the environment from every end. “From climate change and marine pollution to the depletion of flora and fauna, environmental issues have only increased with each passing decade. The future generation has to play a leading role to save the environment,” he said. EBSB Committee members Dr. Ranjeet Kumar Rout, Dr. Vijay Kumar, Dr. Manoj Kumar, Dr. Shakeel Wasim, Dr. Mukund Dutt Sharma, Dr. Mohsin Khan, Dr. Omkar Singh, and Dr. Jaya Srivastava are jointly organizing Swachhata Pakhwaada to motivate the students towards a clean and green initiative.  Prof. Sehgal,   Prof. Bukhari,  Prof. Wani,  and EBSB Committee members along with all other faculty members and student volunteers took Swachhta Shapath (Oath) to make the country clean. They also initiated a “Cleaning March” around the campus.

The cleanliness drive was conducted at Medical units, Canteens, and other places. Garbage including polythene bags were collected on the campus.

The cleanliness drive was coordinated by Dr. Vijay Kumar, while the plantation drive by Dr. Shakeel Waseem.  Dr. Vijay said that both students and faculty members actively participated in the cleanliness drive. He thanked the Director and Registrar NIT Srinagar for their support of such programs on the campus. Mega awareness campaign was initiated among the students. It was followed by hand wash and mask distribution campaigns among the students.   Green Institute Drive (Sapling Plantation and their survival) activities were also conducted across the campus. The program also included community outreach in which both students and faculty members propagated the theme of Swachhata Pakhwaada 2022 among the public in adjacent areas.
