The recent announcement by the finance minister that the University of Agricultural Science (UAS), Raichur, Karnataka, would receive Rs 25 crore from the NABARD’s rural infrastructure development fund for the establishment of an incubation centre for processing and value addition for the promotion of millets is definitely a welcome move. Since Raichur is the nation’s top millet producer, it should be also designated as a millet hub. Enough funding should also be provided to support in-depth research on millets and to encourage farmers to grow them through this hub. In order to increase domestic and international demand for millets and to give the populace nourishment food products, the centre has to ought to hold millet conclaves at this hub every year.
