Anantnag: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Dr Piyush Singla Saturday visited the emerging sinkhole at Wandevalgam, Kokernag. The sinkhole, a natural geographic phenomenon, has been in news recently.
A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Most sinkholes are caused by karst processes – the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks, collapse or suffosion processes. Sinkholes may form gradually or suddenly.
The DC issued directions for perimeter control to ensure no unfortunate mishaps occur. A team from Geography Department, Kashmir University which was present at the site discussed the occurrence with Dr Singla and highlighted the features. They expressed their interest in carrying out research to unearth the exact cause of the occurrence and implications.
A committee of experts has been constituted to study the occurrence in detail. Dr Singla directed the concerned to submit a detailed report within two days before any further intervention is carried out.
The DC was accompanied by SE Hydraulic, officials from R&B, Jal Shakti, Tehsildar among others.
