Srinagar: Unabated cold conditions continue to prevail in Kashmir valley with temperatures further dipped at most places coupled with fog disrupting the normal life while in Drass in Ladakh Union Territory temperature dipped to minus 12.0 degree Celsius on Sunday.
The cold conditions in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh Union Territory further intensified as night temperatures plunged further at most places, however there was a slight improvement in Srinagar where minimum temperature was recorded as minus 1.3 degree Celsius against the minus 1.5 degree Celsius previous day.
However, there was no let up in cold wave conditions coupled with thick fog engulfed at most places in Srinagar disrupting normal activities. Vehicles were playing on most of the roads with headlights on in the morning.
A large rush of people was seen moving towards the traditional Sunday market on Residency road and at Lal chowk to make purchases of warm clothes.
Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir also shivers in the cold and temperature was recorded at minus 4.2 degree Celsius against the minus 4.3 degree Celsius a day ago, showing a slight change of a notch. Most of the small water bodies are frozen in the famous tourist resort of the pahalgam due to the dip in the night temperature.
Kokernag also in south Kashmir settled on minus 1.3 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day on Sunday.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway observed a further dip in the temperature and it was recorded as minus 2.2 against the minus 1.8 degree Celsius yesterday. At Kupwara in frontier north Kashmir district the temperature further dipped to minus 3.0 degree Celsius against the minus 2.7 degree
Celsius recorded a day ago.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg also witnessed a further drop in the night temperature and it was recorded at minus 1.4 degree Celsius against the 1.0 degree Celsius there. Thick fog coupled with cold breeze forced tourist to stay indoors in their respective hotels in the morning, a report from the valley of meadow said.
Drass, the world’s second coldest place after Siberia, settled at minus 12.0 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day at Air Force Station there, while it was minus 8.5 degree Celsius at Leh against the minus 10.3 degree Celsius recorded a day ago, an improvement of two degrees in the night temperature.
The weather is likely to remain dry in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region till November 23, a MeT office said.
