Srinagar: The upper reaches in the valley, including Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas, received season’s first snowfall while incessant rain lashed plains on Sunday morning, resulting in dip in the day temperature.
Meanwhile, the upper reaches in the border town of Drass, which is the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, also received fresh snowfall on Sunday.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur at most places in the valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
Tree, rooftops and mountains turned white as Amarnath cave shrine and adjoining areas received season’s first snowfall on Sunday, resulting in considerable dip in the day temperature. The annual pilgrimage to the holy cave was cancelled for the second successive year in 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic though Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has made arrangements for live pooja and darshan. “It was a different experience for me to see snowfall that too in the month of August. It is unheard of so we were surprised when it started to snow in the morning,” an official deployed near the holy cave told UNI.
Light snowfall was recorded in Pissu Top, Sheshnag, Mahagunas and Panchtarni along traditional Pahalgam route to the holy cave.
Mountains of Drass in the Union Territory of Ladakh also turned white after it received season’s first snowfall, much to the excitement of the locals. However, incessant rain lashed other parts of Drass and Kargil.
People work upto a rainy Sunday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. However, after witnessed incessant rain during most part of the morning, bright sunshine greeted people in the city though weather remained pleasant.
