Srinagar : There was some improvement in the weather conditions in the evening as sun came out from behind the clouds in the summer capital, Srinagar, and other parts of Kashmir valley, where the maximum settled below normal due to overcast conditions followed by rain in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the night temperature dipped though remained above normal in most places in Kashmir valley, where weather warning has been predicted during the next 36 hours during which thundershowers, lightening and hail with gusty winds (30-40 km/hour) would occur at isolated places.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light rain and thundershowers would occur at most places in Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
People woke up to an overcast and chilly Sunday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, where the minimum temperature remained constant since Saturday at 11.7 degree, which is 2 degree above normal. Moderate to heavy rain lashed the city in the afternoon. But, the weather witnessed some improvement as sun came out from behind the clouds though ice cold winds continued. People could be seen wearing warm clothes to evade the chilly weather conditions in the city outskirts.
He said the very light rain and thundershowers could occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperature would settle at around 22 degree and 12 degree.
Intermittent rain lashed the ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, since early this morning, resulting in dip in the maximum and minimum temperatures. The weather in the resort, which remained deserted due to COVID curfew since April 29, was chilly throughout the day due to overcast conditions and rain. The night temperature at Gulmarg dipped about 3 degree from Saturday and settled at 4 degree, which is 3 deree above normal. “About 10 to 12 tourists arrive at the ski resort on an average in a day as most of the bookings have been cancelled due to second wave of COVID-19 pandemic,” a hotelier told UNI.
He said shops and other business establishments also remained closed at Gulmarg while in-house restaurants of hotels remained open to cater to the need of guests.
Light rain in the afternoon was also reported at world famous tourist resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir. The minimum temperature at the resort, which also remained deserted due to COVID lockdown, dipped and settled at 4.7 degree degree, which is marginally above normal.
Rain lashed other parts of the valley, including north, central and south Kashmir in the afternoon followed by overcast conditions. The mercury during night at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara and tourist resort of Kokernag settled 8.8 degree, 8.2 degree and 8.6 degree, respectively.
