Dr. Sheikh Arshid Ahmad
Over million years ago due to big bang the earth was formed as a planet with other planets and celestial bodies. It was very hot with swirling seas and fire spewing out of volcanoes. No glimpse of life existed in different habitats, just only the atmosphere of intense heat and freezing cold that created only the huge oceans of water. However, the unfavourable circumstances, in the lifeless earth held the seed of life, and slowly the first organic or bimolecular formed. Over millions of years these tiny, living things got changed to protozoan animals, later Bacteria and blue green algae, mosses, horsetails and ferns produced oxygen giving the breath of life for the fish and reptiles. In the formation of atmosphere there happened the creation of the ozone layer that protects the living things from harmful Ultra violet rays of the sun. The lifeless planet became a living world by the creation of other living things such as plants and higher animals gradually took its place in the web of life and it took long million of prehistory. The last to arrive on the scene was man. As the man was called as social being with his management and care has developed and progressed gradually built his world but by his greed and cursing approach started to divide up the earth into mine and yours, theirs and ours. He didn’t see himself as belonging to the earth but saw the earth as belonging to him to use for his comfort as he saw fit. He has forgotten some one’s right saying “The Earth does not belong to us but we belong to earth”. This has resulted the tremendous overuse of earth’s resources and lead the society to come under pressure of unemployment, pollution, ecological disturbance, deforestation, floods, global warming, change in precipitation, climatic and seasonal changes etc.
Individuals of every age can also make good choices on the basis of wisdom to reduce the stress and pollution on resources and the environment. If we consider the bad impact on the current times environment and its damaging consequences then we can have to start a collective and healing conscience and move on the biological and ecological systems definitely the time of recovery is there.
Wetlands has changed drastically into dry lands and disturbed the habitats of aquatic animals. Wild animals have started to come down to locality and created nuisance and threat to people of being attacked. Inequality is growing within people quiet alarmingly. The biggest inequality is in the way resources are distributed unevenly in the world with poor countries become poorer and poorer and the well developed countries using more and more of the resources getting richer and richer. This inequality causes problems of whole world with the increasing pollution and damage to the environment are looking out of control. Mahatma Gandhi said’ “ The earth has enough for our needs but not our greed” the earth is the source of our wealth and well being but Human talents and abilty must be used to adapt and innovate to live within the resources of the earth.
