GMC’s Super Speciality Hospital special in name only

Srinagar: Srinagar’s Super Speciality Hospital is special in name only as the Government Medical College authorities have put the onus of running the patient care on the shoulders of nursing staff throughout day and night.
The hospital which was put to work four years ago despite lacking infrastructure and manpower needed for running a speciality care lacks efficient administration.
Insiders in the hospital say that the doctors and administration of the college have put the pressure of running the hospital on nursing staff.
“We work throughout day and night for patients. Yet if there is any lack of medical care to patients, GMC authorities blame and shame us. Doctors are not even asked about any lack of medical care,” say the nursing staff.
“From ground floor to Third floor, nursing staff is wholly running it. Resident doctors except in Gastroenterology and Cardiology are available for critical care patients during night in the hospital. If any patient develops complications, we have to look after him. Even Casualty Medical Officers (CMO) don’t stay overnight in the hospital. They leave at 8:pm every evening, leaving the hospital and patient load on nursing staff,” sources said.
The nursing staff says that the power of Matrons have been snatched by Medical Superintendent and hence they don’t have anyone to raise their issue before.
“Medical Superintendent or GMC Principal never listen to our grievances or even try to address them. We appeal the governor administration to intervene,” they said.
Insiders said that the Nursing staff has not been provided the facilities of transport during curfews or shutdowns or other emergency situations.
“No transport, no hostel facility, no medical or child care leave is provided to us by the GMC authorities. Our Duty Rosters are quite awry. We have raised these issues before the Principal time and again, but she never listens to them,” sources said.
