Kreeri infant death case: Probe ordered into allegation of negligence

Srinagar: Following instructions from the governor’s grievance cells the G B Pant hospital has ordered a probe to investigate the allegations of negligence in the case of a death of a new born bay of village kreeri of Baramulla district at G B Pant hospital Srinagar.
As already reported that a new-born of Kreeri Baramulla was referred from Noora Hospital to GB Pant Hospital, where the baby died two days later. The baby was admitted at the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.
Though the hospital authorities have said that the death took place due to health problems, the family has alleged that it was the negligence by hospital staff that led to death of the baby.
“For one day, the baby was admitted in the ward of the hospital, where in the night, a blower was kept too close to the baby,” said Aijaz Ahmed Wani, father of the newborn, a resident of Kreeri Baramulla.
He alleged that the baby was referred to the hospital from Noora Hospital with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and a “little difficulty in breathing”.
“It is because of the blower that my baby suffered serious burns in arm and leg and that caused her death,” he said.
Medical superintendent GB Pant Hospital, Dr Kanwaljeet said that the newborn had “peripheral cyanosis”, a condition which turns the dark due to internal health problems.
“It is recorded in the referral that we received from Noora Hospital,” he said. He said that what appears to be burns in limbs are DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation), known to cause discoloration of limbs.
A report in this regard has been sought by the Grievance Cell of the Governor following which a five member inquiry committee headed by Dr Parvez Ahmed, associate professor of paediatrics was constituted by the hospital.
