Srinagar: Five forces’ personnel were wounded in an ongong gunfight with the government forces in Mujgund area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday evening .
The gunfight broke after the forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) in Ghat mohalla of Mujgund after inputs about the presence of militants. A police official said that the gunfight ensued after the militants hiding in a house fired at the forces.
He said an army man, CRPF man and three Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel were wounded in the gunfight.
Local reports said that four houses were blasted by the forces during the gunfight. They said sound of huge blasts was heard in the area.
Intense clashes erupted near the gunfight site after locals staged protests to disrupt the anti-militant operation.
The official said that the operation is going on. “No militant body has been recovered so far,” he said, adding that three militants are believed to be hiding in the area. Clashes broke out between protesters and the government forces near the site of a gunfight in Mujgund area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday. Reports said that people, mostly youth, took to streets as soon as the news of the gunfight spread in the area. They said that announcements were made over the public address systems of the mosques asking youth to stage protests.
An eye witness said that youth pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the anti-militant operation. He said the forces responded by firing tear gas shells.
Meanwhile, the exchange of fire was on between the militants trapped in a house and the forces when last reports came.
