2 Day National Inter-Disciplinary Science Conference Concludes at SP College Srinagar

Srinagar: A two-day national inter-disciplinary science conference on the theme ‘Science in Development (SiD-2018),’ organized by Department of Environment & Water Management and PG Department of Environmental Science Sri Partap College Srinagar concluded here at SP College.
Those who participated in the conference included Vice Chancellor Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Javid Ahmed, former Dean School of Life Sciences JNU, New Delhi, Prof. (Dr.) R. N. K. Bamezai, Dean Academic Affairs Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) M Y Peerzada, Dean Life Sciences Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Maqsooda Khan , Controller Examination Cluster University Srinagar, ex Principal S. P. College Srinagar, ex. HoDs Physics, Chemistry, English S. P. College Srinagar and others.
Prof. R. N. K. Bamezai presented key note lecture titled ‘Understanding Complex Systems Require Interdisciplinary and Cross-disciplinary Approach’. He gave a detailed lecture citing many examples from his research and emphasized the need for interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches to understand complex syste He elaborated on the use of a holistic approach with computational inputs for delineating different genes and pathways in complex diseases like leprosy, breast cancer, and type-2 diabetes and maintained that designing inhibitors against metabolic tuners involved in tumor progression would prove of societal benefit to contain cancers in future.
The inaugural session was followed by four technical sessions with oral and poster presentations by delegates. Over 150 scientists and research scholars participated in the conference and presented their research findings. This conference was aimed at to provide a platform to researchers from different fields of science and technology for deliberating and discussing different aspects of application of science and technology in the development of countries.
During the proceedings of the presentations in different technical sessions, lead lectures were delivered by eminent scientists. Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Javid Ahmed in his lecture on the topic ‘Quantum Computers—An Emerging Frontier’ explained to the audience the importance of quantum computers and how these will facilitate solving complex problems and mysteries in studies of the environment, deadly diseases, origin of the universe, deep-space exploration etc. Another lead lecture was given by Prof. (Dr.) Shakil Ahmed Romshoo, head of Dept of Earth Sciences, KU on the topic ‘Contemporary Environmental Issues of Societal Importance in Kashmir’ in which he gave detailed account of different contemporary environmental problems of the Valley like climate change, pollution of water bodies, drying up of wetlands, deteriorating air quality etc. The noted scientist also explained the flood and earthquake vulnerability of the Valley. Dr. Inaam ul Haq of Dept of Social & Preventive Medicine, GMC Srinagar, explained the methods involved in public health survey research. The two day conference concluded with a valedictory session which was graced among others by Registrar Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. Sheikh Abdul Hameed, Dean School of Engineering & Technology Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Muhammad Aslam Baba and Dean School of Life Sciences Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Maqsooda Khan.
Principal SP College Prof. (Dr.) Khursheed Ahmed Khan welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, delegates, students and others present on the occasion. He also deliberated on quantum computing and urged the faculty members of the college to take research projects.
The registrar Cluster University Srinagar Prof. Sheikh Abdul Hameed in his speech encouraged students to participate in the co-curricular activities and he emphasized the point that profitable use of science is needed for progress. Best oral and poster presentations of different technical sessions by participants namely Dr Nusrat Sameem, Dr Asif Iqbal Qureshi, Dr Riyaz Ahmed Mir, Ms Nusrat Fayaz, Dr Tabassum Ismail and Ms Nasreen Sajad were felicitated on the occasion. Dr Humaira Qadri, organizing secretary of the conference, coordinated the inaugural and valedictory sessions and vote of thanks in both the sessions was presented by Dr Abdul Roouf Bhat who was the co-organizing secretary of the conference.
