Srinagar : A spontaneous shutdown in Srinagar against the killing of militants and Fateh Kadal house owner’s son at Fateh Kadal crippled normal life across Srinagar minutes after the news about the killings spread.
Reports said soon after the news about the killing of two militants and the son of a house owner in Fateh Kadal area of old Srinagar city a spontaneous shutdown against the killings hit normal life across Srinagar. Law enforcing authorities suspended mobile internet services and closed all schools and colleges in Srinagar. Meanwhile reports said the killings in Fateh Kadal sparked off violent protests in Fateh Kadal, Karfali Mohalla, Safa Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Eidgah and other parts of Srinagar city . Angry protesters clashed with the government forces who burst tear gas canisters and fired pellets to disperse the stone pelting protesters. At least twenty people were injured in the clashes that continued till late evening. Many journalists covering the encounter were also roughed up by the government forces in the area leading to outrage among the media fraternity. Media associations including Jammu & Kashmir Editors Forum (JKEF) and Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) condemned the police action forcing senior police officers to tender an apology.
