Srinagar: As part of the continuous efforts of the Government to keep available potable drinking water in sufficient quantity to the common people of Srinagar City, the Secretary, Public Health Engineering (PHE) I&FC, Farooq Ahmad Shah, Thursday, inspected Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Rangil in Ganderbal to take stock of its functioning.
The Secretary inspected both 20 MGD and 10 MGD reservoirs, in addition of touring water purifying units, alum tanks, bleaching unit, flash mixer cum stilling chamber, water testing laboratories and pump room.
While giving brief detail about the functioning of 30 MGD WTP, the Secretary was apprised that the water treatment plant feeds potable drinking water to more than seven lakh population of Srinagar City. The Secretary said the Srinagar city has the requirement of 90 MGD and currently 88 MGD are available for use from various water treatment plants including Rangil, Nishat, Alasteng, Doodhganga and Padshahibagh.
The Secretary said after the completion of Sukhnag and Nowhar water treatment plant, Srinagar will have sufficient potable water supply 24X7. He also directed the officials to prepare a DPR for upgradation of Rangil WTP so as to be prepared for future requirements also.
On the occasion, Farooq Shah said God has gifted the valley with abundant water resources adding that it is our prime duty to protect and keep them pollution free. He said consumers should use the supplied water judiciously without any wastage. He said safeguarding of water resources is important and this is the moral and personal responsibility of the people to conserve water.
He said the government is duty bound to provide safe drinking water to the people and reaffirmed government’s resolve to eradicate water-borne diseases in the State. He directed for immediate cleaning of all surroundings of Rangil WTP so that any possible contamination of water is avoided.
The Secretary stressed upon the engineers to maintain quality and ensure that potable water is supplied to consumers regularly. He asked the establishment to maintain the records properly and directed the engineers for expedite metering process of water to generate more revenue.
Besides taking a review meeting with the senior officials of the PHE department, the Secretary also had an interaction with the staff of the treatment plant. He stressed upon the officials to carry out regular inspection of water tanks and asked them to perform their duties with full dedication. The employees also put forth their demands to which Secretary said all of their genuine demands will be redressed at the earliest.
