Srinagar: Security forces arrested six people and seized brown sugar worth Rs 36 crore besides arms and ammunition that were infiltrated from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector in north Kashmir district of Kupwara.
Terming the arrests and recovery of drugs and arms as a major success, Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force (BSF) Sonali Mishra said with this the forces were able to throttle an attempt from across the LoC to start narco-terrorism activity in the valley.
“A specific information was received by the BSF intelligence branch about attempts being made to infiltrate drugs, arms and ammunition into the hinterland from the other side of LoC. Following this input, a checkpoint was established at village Sadpora, Karnah in Tangdhar sector, about a km from the LoC by the BJP and local police on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday,” Ms Mishra told reporters here on Monday.
She said two vehicles were intercepted at the checkpoint, and during checking security forces recovered 12 kg of brown sugar worth Rs 36 crore (in 12 packets), two AK-56 rifles, two AK magazines, four mobile phones from the vehicles. “Four people onboard the vehicle were immediately taken into custody,” she said, adding both the vehicle were also seized.
Ms Mishra said the accused were identified as Shabir Ahmad, Mushtaq Ahmad, Jakir Hussain and Rafiq Ahmad. “During their interrogation by the local police, the accused gave away the name of two people, who were the masterminds behind the crime,” she said.
