Geelani hails UN report on Kashmir

Srinagar: Hailing the recent report on human rights violations by Indian forces issued by United Nations, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Friday said “though Indian atrocities and barbarism have crossed all the limits and are continuing unabated for the last 70 years, it is for the first time that UN has realized the gravity and severity of this grave and grim situation”.
“This world body has testified our stand that Indian armed forces under the undemocratic and unethical shield of legal impunity continue the genocide of Kashmir, with bullets, pellets, torture, rape and humiliation,” Geelani said in a statement issued to GNS.
Hurriyat (G) chairman further said that if the iron fist and military might of India is not stopped, people of the state will have to face tougher and harsher days ahead.
He said that rejecting the report by India is nothing but arrogance of power and military might because in the age of modern and latest technology, nothing remains hidden for the sharp eyes of the lens, which displays even the minute details of the incident.
“We are not surprised by the Indian rejection as they have been in denial mode for the last 7 decades, but world recognizes the ground realities and day to day atrocities in this land and Indian denial carries no weight,” he said.
Geelani appealed UN rights body to take serious note of this “brazen denial” of facts and pressurize India to abide by the universal obligations and fulfill long pending UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir to pave a way for permanent peace and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Geelani once again expressed grief over the killing of journalist and editor-in-chief of Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari saying he was shocked to hear the tragic news of this gruesome incident.
“Our faith teaches us that killing of an innocent is equal to killing of whole humanity and it is unfortunate that our elders have to shoulder the coffins of their youngsters on daily basis,” he said.
On Geelani’s directions, his both sons Naeem Zaffar Geelani and Naseem Zaffar Geelani, and Hurriyat chief spokesperson G A Gulzar participated in the funeral of late Shujaat Bukhari at his native village Keeri.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (G) spokesperson said police prevented Geelani from offeringFriday prayers. He said police kept the door closed from outside and did not allow the Hurriyat leader to come out and offer Friday prayers.
The spokesperson condemned the police action and said that authorities have turned Geelani’s residence into a prison.
“A heavy contingent of police and CRPF is deployed on the main gate of his residence where Geelani Sahab continues to be under house arrest for the last eight years,” he said. (GNS)
