We all are tested from time to time. Whether it’s financial, health or loss of a loved one, we should never lose sight of the bigger picture. Allah the Almighty is the one in control of all the things. Holy Quran says that if Allah the Almighty loves people, he puts them to trial. He tests them and places them in difficulty. Allah the Almighty says in Surah Al-Baqarah: And we will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to him we will return.” Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Allah and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided [Quran 2:155]. And for one we all know what it’s like to lose what we love. This is when your faith is really put to the test and when we are tested with hardships what will we do? Will we complain why me, or cry or will we stand strong and tall and have faith in Allah the Almighty? The ones who have the patience without complaining will be greatly rewarded whereas the one who does not show patience will receive nothing. Islam calls upon all of us to shown patience despite the situation that comes our way. Anyone suffering from an illness should remain patient, for there is no reward better or more enriching than that reserved for those who endure in patience. Suhaib ibn Sinan narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: “How remarkable is the case of the believer! There is good for him in everything, but this is not the case for anyone except for the believer. When the believer receives any good, he is thankful to Allah, and gets a reward. And when some misfortune befalls him, he endures it patiently, for which he is (also) rewarded.” Hazrat Anas narrates: “I heard the Prophet (s) saying: ‘Allah says: “When I afflict a servant of mine with respect to his two most beloved things (meaning his eyes), and he endures it patiently, I grant him paradise in return‘.”At work, we are sometimes denied a promotion, treated unfairly, or even fired. At home, our children may be a test for us especially in this world of violence, drugs, and video games.
Some of us may go through a turbulent times in personal life and many of us may find that they have an illness that is very challenging. Often, it is very trying on us, and many of us fall into despair. It is important during these times not to lose hope, but rather to exercise sabr or patience. Patience is an aspiration because it is not just something that we do, but rather something that we need to build in ourselves and adapt to different situations. Its importance is highlighted in the fact that it has been mentioned in the Qur’an over ninety times. We all know that nothing in the hollu Qur’an is without purpose, so reflect on the fact that Allah is reminding us of this characteristic numerous times. Although having ambition and drive is good, it should not be by compromising our ethics. We may have to face setbacks now and then, but when we remember that our aim is for the akhira and not simply the dunya, patience is easier to inculcate.
