Jammu: Two army men and as many militants were killed after suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed militants attacked the Sunjwan army camp here in Jammu in the wee hours of Saturday. A junior commissioner officer (JCO) was among the deceased and nine others, including five women and children, were injured. The area has currently been cordoned off. While Governor N N Vohra has voiced concern over the attack, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, National Conference President and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, leader of the opposition in the assembly and another former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have condemned the attack on the Sunjwan army camp in Jammu
“As part of the ongoing operation in Sunjwan, the Army has killed two heavily armed militants. The militants were wearing combat uniforms carrying AK 56 assault rifle, large amount of ammunition & hand grenades,” Defence PRO was quoted as saying by ANI. “Search of their belongings confirm the militants to be from Jaish-e-Mohammed. So far JCO & 1 NCO both belonging to J&K have been martyred & 9 others are injured. Two of them being critical. Operation will continue till all militants are apprehended or killed,” he added.
According to sources, at around 5 am, three to four militants entered the JCO family quarters located at the rear side of the army camp. Officials said the militants have been cornered in one of the family quarters and the operation is underway.
Intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment by JeM in view of the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013. State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that Madan Lal Choudhary and Mohammed Ashraf Mir were killed in the attack.
Governor N.N. Vohra has expressed serious concern about the fidayeen attack on the Sunjwan Army Camp in Jammu this morning. He spoke to Lt.Gen. Devraj Anbu, Northern Army Commander, and conveyed grief over loss of life of a personnel and wished speedy recovery to those injured in the attack. Governor re-iterated his advise about the need for an uncompromising audit of all security establishments.
Condemning the act, the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti described the attack as an effort by elements inimical to peace to break the developmental pace in the State, thereby putting the common masses to immense trouble. She appealed all sections of society to stand together in such a sensitive time and defeat the designs of the perpetrators who also want to divide people under different names besides creating chaos in the society and the State. Mehbooba Mufti tributed the slain Army personnel, praised their valour and sympathised with the bereaved families of soldiers. She also wished the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh has condemned attack on Sunjawan Military base describing it as an act of desperation of the forces trying to spread chaos and terror in the state.
While paying glowing tributes to the martyred Army personnel, Dr Singh praised their valour and sense of dedication towards nation. He also sympathized with the bereaved families of soldiers and wished the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.
National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Working President Omar Abdullah on Saturday condemned the militant attack on Sunjwan Army Camp in Jammu and expressed solidarity with the families of those who died in line of their duty.
In a statement, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah conveyed their condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
