Srinagar: Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in Kupwara and Baramulla in north Kashmir for security reasons following killing of the militants.
Official sources told UNI that militants attacked a police party at Kajwar, Handwara in Kupwara on Monday evening.
They said the police personnel retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.
Reinforcements were rushed to cordon the area to foil any attempts by militants to escape.
“Two militants were killed in the brief encounter,” they said.
“Two terrorists neutralized in Zachaldara Handwara in North Kashmir in a joint operation of @JmuKmrPolice, Army and @crpfindia. Good work. Keep it up,” Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
One of the militant has been identified as Ashiq Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Palhalan Pattan in Baramulla while another is believed to be a local, they added.
They said instantaneous protests erupted at Palhalan Pattan and adjoining areas as the news of the death of Bhat spread in the area.
