Kulgam: Massive protests erupted in a village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam after two fresh braid chopping incidents were reported Wednesday morning , taking the total number of such cases to seven in the last 48 hours in the district.
The fresh braid chopping incidents came even as Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday asked Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid to constitute a special team to probe the mysterious hair chopping incidents in Kulgam and other places of the state.
Hundreds of protestors took to streets at Chemar, Damhal and adjoining areas in Kulgam to protest against alleged failure of the administration and police to catch the culprits.
The protestors demanded that the culprits behind such crimes should be identified and punished immediately as it has caused panic among young girls and their parents.
However, life returned to normal in Kulgam , barring the places where people protested against the fresh incidents, after remained crippled Tuesday this week following chopping of braids of five girls in the district on Monday.
Meanwhile, police has rejected reports circulated on social media, where it was stated that ‘a person behind hair chopping was caught in Malwan in Kulgam, but the Army came and rescued him’.
A police spokesperson clarified that on Monday at about 2000 hrs, when 9 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) cordoned off few houses in village Malwan, some miscreants started spreading rumour that Army has rescued a person behind hair chopping from one house.
“The house owners also clarified that they didn’t catch anyone, neither Army rescued anyone from their home,’ he said.
He said rumour mongers taking advantage of situation are trying to create fear psychosis amongst people. “These anti-social elements will be dealt with sternly under legal provisions,” he said.
“We appeal reasonable and respected people to come forward and cooperate with police to ensure curbing these elements and their activities,” he added.
In view of panic created among local population due to such incident in Kulgam, Ms Mehbooba on Monday directed Dr Vaid to constitute a special team to identify and bring to justice the persons behind the mysterious hair chopping incidents which came to fore in the district and other places of the state.
She also asked the DGP to speed up the probe in such cases which have caused panic among young girls and their parents.
