Srinagar: After protesting for the sixth consecutive day, the Anganwadi workers on Saturday deferred their protests for one week after the Divisional Commissioner assured them of taking up their matter with the concerned minister.
The Anganwadi workers were protesting from the last Monday to press the government over their demands of enhancing their monthly honorarium upto Rs 14000 per month.
Earlier in the day, the protesting workers blocked the busy MA Road near Press Enclave. The Tehsildar South Srinagar, Sanam Mansoor along with other officials reached the spot and asked them for a meeting with the Divisional Commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan.
Scores of Anganwadi workers went to the Divisional Commissioner’s office and held a meeting with him.
The workers after holding a meeting deferred their protests for one week, saying that Khan assured them that he will take up their matter with the concerned Minister.
“We have decided to defer protests for one week but in case the government fails to fulfil their demands in one week, we will take streets against the government again and will take extreme step for which the government will be held responsible,” the workers said.
Earlier, the workers blocked the road and chanted slogans in favour of their demands. The area also witnessed traffic mess after the protesters blocked the road.
They said that it is unfortunate that the government is ignoring them at all fronts. “We are demanding enhance on our wages at par with the other states like Delhi, Tamil Nadu and others. Why the government is turning its eye blind towards the sufferings of hundreds of workers,” they said.
Fahmeeda, a protesting worker said despite serving the department with sincerity and honesty, the government has miserably failed to enhance their monthly honorarium from past several years.
She said that the government must increase their monthly honorarium upto Rs 14000 per month.
Protesters said that the government has assured them several times that their genuine demands will be fulfilled soon but unfortunately all the promises and assurances done with them proved hoax on the ground.
