Srinagar: Chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammed Yasin Malik remained under house arrest in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, about half a dozen other separatist leaders have also been put under house arrest while several others are detained in police stations.
Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had yesterday in a joint statement urged people to hold protests after Friday prayers against US action of branding Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Syed Salahuddin as a terrorist.
“Mirwaiz remained under house arrest since Monday,” media advisor to moderate HC Advocate Shahidul Islam said.
He said the Mirwaiz was not being allowed to move out of his Nigeen house, where a large number of security forces and police personnel remained deployed.
The Mirwaiz was not allowed to offer Friday prayers last week in a mosque while he was not allowed to offer Eid prayers at historic Eidgah in Srinagar, he alleged.
“There was no change near the Hyderpora house of Mr Geelani as large number of security forces remained deployed outside,” a spokesperson of hardline HC said.
A spokesman of the JKLF said Malik was placed under house arrest at his Maisuma residence since yesterday evening.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Altaf Shah, son-in-low of Mr Geelani; Aiyaz Akbar, Spokesman of the amalagam and Mehrajuddin Kalwal, another senior leader, remained lodged in a police station in Srinagar.
