Srinagar/June,8: Five militants were killed when alert troops foiled yet another cross over attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.
This is the fourth infiltration bid foiled at LoC in north Kashmir since Wednesday. With these five militants, the total number of infiltrators killed since Wednesday has risen to 12. A soldier was also killed and two others injured during counter insurgency operation yesterday.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Rajesh Kalia said that troops noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side of border from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) at Uri sector in Baramulla Friday evening.
However, when challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
The security force retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said, adding two militants were killed in the initial exchange of fire.
Additional security forces were rushed to the area and search operation was launched near the LoC in Uri sector.
Col Kalia said contact was again established with the militants later in the evening during which three more infiltrators were gunned down.
He said search operation is still going on in the area when the reports last came in.
Two Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) members, who tried to infiltrate into this side of LoC at Uri sector to carry out an attack on the soldiers, were also killed on May 26.
Six more militants were killed in the same sector on the following day when they attempted to sneak into Kashmir valley from across the border.
