Ang: In a gunfight, two local militants were killed in Sangam area of South Kashmir’s Islamabad district. After receiving inputs about the presence of militants in Sangam area of Anantnag district teams of government forces cordoned it off and during search operation militants fire on them. Two local militants were killed in the exchange of fire.
Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh at a presser in Srinagae said that slain militants were affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who were wanted in different militancy related incidents.
He identified the slain militants as Naveed Bhat alias Furqan, resident of Qaimoh and Aaqib Yaseen Bhat, also a resident of Qaimoh. Naveed and Aaqib have joined militant ranks in 2018.
The DGP said that arms and ammunition have been recovered from them. He said operations against militants will continue while strict action will be initiated against those who harass innocent citizens.
The police chief according to Kashmir News Trust said that a joint team of police and army conducted cordon and search operation (CASO) after which encounter between the militants and the forces broke out. This was the second major encounter this week.
On February 19, this week, government forces killed three militants Jangeer Rafiq Wani, Raja Umar Maqbool Bhat and Uzair Amin Bhat of Hizbul Mujahideen at Awantipora in the Pulwama district of South Kashmir.
Sources said that as the news about the death of two militants spread in their native villages, shopkeepers downed their shutters and transport disappeared off the roads. A complete shutdown was observed in parts of Kulgam and Bijbehara.
Thousands of people participated in the last rites of these slain militants. Witnesses said that mourners raised pro-freedom slogans during the funeral processions of these two militants.
