Jammu: Massive throng was witnessed in Jammu markets as curfew was relaxed for almost a day in Jammu and people rushed to buy essentials on Wednesday.

Officials said that initially curfew was relaxed from 8 to 10 am but as the situation remained normal, it was extended further by the district administration. “First it was extended till 1 pm and then till 3 and later till 5 pm before imposing curfew again,” they said.

According to KNO correspondent, there was a huge rush to markets and traffic was resumed on roads. “People thronged the market and traffic including public and private came to back to roads as people rushed to complete their works and to go to places they needed to visit,” they said.

According to officials, ATM’s were duly kept cash filled and milk supplies were taken care of. They said that they had restored the mobile internet in the region for some time but rumours began to spread over social media websites forcing authorities to suspend the internet again. Officials told KNO that those who perpetrated the violence in Jammu targeting people to specific community won’t be tolerated.

Schools and colleges remain closed in the winter capital and the decision for lifting of the curfew and opening educational institutions will be taken on Thursday. “The decision about curfew and schools etc will be taken tomorrow after a thorough review of the situation,” they said.

Gujjar Welfare Committee also addressed the presser, saying that harmony in the Jammu has been retained since long and some ‘anti-national elements did it to trigger communal clashes’. “Law should take its own course and see to it that people who take law in their hands are brought to book,” they said.

Curfew was imposed in winter capital six days ago after violence broke out in the region as arsonists targeted Muslim specific areas and Kashmiris in the Jammu. They torched more than 100 vehicles before authorities imposed curfew and Army was called in to control the situation.

Meanwhile, in view of prevailing situation law and Order situation, the district Magistrate Jammu ordered closure of all colleges falling within the jurisdiction of district Jammu tomorrow (Thursday). However, he further added that all the educational institutions both government and private up to class 10+2 shall function normally w.e.f. 21-02-2019.(KNO)
