Militant killed in Pulwama, town curfewed

Srinagar : A militant was on Saturday killed and another one injured during a gunfight with the government forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said. Meanwhile thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of the slain militant late in the day

A police official said that army men of 55 RR, CRPF men and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir Police laid a siege around a cluster of houses in Babgund area of Pulwama town and started door to door search operations around 2am.

Militants hiding in one of the residential houses fired upon the forces, triggering a gunfight, said the official, adding that one militant was killed during the exchange of fire.  They identified the slain militant as Shabir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Samboora.A police official said that curfew has been imposed in entire Pulwama town “as a precautionary measure” to prevent protests.

reports said that two other militants managed to escape from the site and later it was revealed that one among them was injured in the gunfight when some unknown persons brought him to SMHS hospital here where he was operated upon by the doctors.

A police officer identified the injured militant as Showkat Ahmad Dar son of Nazir Ahmad Dar of Muran, Pulwama.

The officer said that Showkat was admitted by some unknown men and women who recorded his name as Bashir Ahmad in the hospital records. He said that police has taken cognizance and further action is being taken.

According to a doctor, Dar has received a bullet wound in his abdomen which severely damaged his internal organs. “His condition is very critical,” said hospital sources adding that he has been shifted to ICU and his condition is being regularly monitored.

Thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of slain militant Shabir Ahmad Dar at his native village of Samboora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday.

Dar was killed in a firefight with the government forces at Babagund on the edge of Pulwama town. As the word about the killing of Dar spread, large number of people from the adjoining and far-off places gathered at Samboora to participate in his last rites.

After three rounds of funeral prayers, Dar was interred at his ancestral graveyard.

Another militant injured in the gunfight is being treated at SMHS hospital in Srinagar where his condition is stated to be very critical.
