Srinagar: Defying the directions from Joint Resistance Leadership, people across Kashmir Valley observed a complete shutdown for the third straight day to mourn the militant and civilian killings.
JRL had not issued an strike call for the day. It had issued a press statement stating that they will proceed to Shopian on Wednesday.
Pertinently, 13 militants and 4 civilians were killed on Sunday in South Kashmir. The killings sparked massive protests while a youth from Kangan lost his life in police action as well taking the civilian toll to five.
Authorities imposed severe restrictions in parts of Srinagar city, Kangan and restive areas of Southern districts.
All the shops, business establishments, government and private offices remained mostly closed. Skeletal, private transport, however, moved in uptown and outskirts in Srinagar.
Heavy deployment of government forces had been made in Srinagar and other sensitive places in the Kashmir Valley to “maintain peace and law and order.”
The authorities closed all educational institutions and postponed exams scheduled for Wednesday as tension continued in the Kashmir Valley. Geelani and Mirwaiz were placed under house arrest while Malik has been lodged in Srinagar central jail. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai had also been placed under house arrest.
Mirwaiz defied house detention but was arrested while Geelani’s Hyderpora based house was locked and he was not allowed to come out from the residence.
Stone-pelting incident was reported from Nowhatta Srinagar where some youth pelted stones on deployed forces.
Reports said that clashes erupted in Thregam Kupwara in North Kashmir where youth pelted stones on deployed forces. Locals alleged that government forces thrashed people and smashed windowpanes at Checkpora Thregam. Clashes also erupted in Shopian where government forces lobbed tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
