DGP Says “we seek preferences, not reservations”, Pvt Schools Association says “won’t allow police intervention in school admissions”
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police is caught in a row over its decision on reservation of the wards of police personnel in Private schools in Kashmir.
Though a letter has been sent to principals of private schools of Kashmir valley and President Kashmir private schools association G N Var for their participation in a meeting with the members of a committee constituted by police department for the purposes but majority of the school principals are unlikely to attend the meeting. The police department has in this letter asked the principals of private schools to reserve seats for the wards of the police personnel in lieu of the practice and training the police department offers to give to the students of these schools participation in national/school events.
When contacted Director General Police Dr S P Vaid said ” We have asked for preference to wards of police personnel and not reservations”. Asked why police does not seek reservations for wards of police personnel in Government schools DGP Vaid told Kashmir Horizon ‘ children of police personnel also take admissions in government schools’. However G N Var. President Kashmir Private Schools Association when contacted told Kashmir Horizon ” I am not going to attend the meeting for this purpose in the office of DIG South Kashmir tomorrow on 27th March.Some principals May attend the meeting for the reasons of fear and harassment but majority of principal invited will skip the meeting. This is unwarranted intervention of police in working of schools and this won’t be tolerated’. He further said ” It is interference in education by police. Pvt schools are already under financial crunch and can’t afford any concessions Police has its own welfare fund and also its own school- Police Public School . Our schools can’t discriminate between police and civil. Child is a child and we have nothing to do whether his/her parents are police or civil. For a deserving student we have all the sympathies but financing is the responsibility of Govt having huge resources. Police is paid for the services what about the deserving and poor civilians It is a direct attack on the autonomy of Schools”
