• Police register 3,257 NDPS cases under anti-drug campaign, 288 properties worth Rs 138 crore attached
Srinagar: More than 4,000 people have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the illegal drug trade since the launch of the anti-drug campaign in April, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Addressing participants at the Kashmir Marathon-Run for Unity in Srinagar, Prabhat said police had registered 3,257 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since April 11, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign from Jammu.
“Around 4,000 individuals have been arrested and 170 convictions have been secured,” the DGP said, adding that more than 2,500 cases had already been disposed of.
Prabhat said Jammu and Kashmir had attached 288 properties linked to drug-related cases, with their total value estimated at around Rs 138 crore. Police have also seized Rs 80 lakh in cash, he said.
The DGP further said 144 accused persons had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS), which he said was the highest number among states and Union Territories.
He said the anti-drug drive was being pursued alongside counter-terrorism operations, crime prevention, criminal detection and maintaining law and order.
The Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan aims to address substance abuse among youth and promote a drug-free society.
