Institute showcases indigenous drone technology for high-altitude, low-temperature operations
Srinagar : The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has been awarded the First Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Education and Academic Development at the 12th Vibrant India 2026 Expo, which took place in New Delhi from October 23 to 25.
The institute was represented by Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, Mr. Aban Habib, and Mr. Shebaan Habib, who showcased an innovative drone prototype specifically designed for high-altitude and low-temperature environments. This demonstration underscored NIT Srinagar’s commitment to developing indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies tailored to the unique challenges posed by the Himalayan region. The Vibrant India 2026 event, organized by NNS Media Group as part of Meri Dilli Utsav, gathered various stakeholders, including government organizations and public sector enterprises, to highlight achievements across multiple sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure. The drone innovation presented by NIT Srinagar addresses significant engineering challenges related to UAV operations in high-altitude conditions, where factors like low temperatures and reduced air density can impact battery performance and flight endurance. This technological advancement emphasizes the critical need for indigenous drone development for specialized applications in mountainous and remote areas, with potential uses in infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, and high-altitude observation. Director NIT Prof. Anurag Misra and Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, commended the team’s efforts in demonstrating the institute’s engineering capabilities on a national stage.
