From the revival of Kashmir’s cinematic legacy with the curtain raiser of the first International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir to key security reviews for the Amarnath Yatra, a reading marathon promoting education and environmental awareness, and tributes to a martyred policeman, here are six important developments that made headlines across Jammu and Kashmir this week.
1. Kashmir Set To Host First International Film Festival: The curtain raiser for the first International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) was held at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, senior officials and noted filmmakers including Muzaffar Ali and Imtiaz Ali attended the event. Scheduled from September 7 to 10, the festival has already received around 400 entries from over 25 countries.
2. LG Reviews Security, Amarnath Yatra Arrangements: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level security review meeting in Srinagar with senior officials from the Army, J&K Police, CAPFs and civil administration. He directed all departments to ensure seamless coordination and strengthen safety measures for pilgrims undertaking the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra amid recent heavy rainfall.
3. Reading Marathon Promotes Books, Green Future: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off a Reading Marathon on the banks of Dal Lake as part of the Chinar Book Festival. Thousands of students from colleges and universities participated in the event, organised by the National Book Trust to mark six years of the National Education Policy under the theme “Run for a Green Future.”
4. LG Welcomes Defence Minister Rajnath Singh: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha welcomed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on his arrival at Srinagar Airport on Saturday. Sinha shared the update through a post on X.
5. Sunil Sharma Meets Martyr HC Ashiq Hussain’s Family: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma visited the family of slain Head Constable Ashiq Hussain at Lolipora, Beerwah, to offer condolences. He described the policeman’s sacrifice as a service to the nation and said the Centre stands firmly with the bereaved family.
6. School May Be Named After Slain Policeman: Following his visit to the martyr’s family, Sunil Sharma said efforts would be made to name a school or another public institution after Head Constable Ashiq Hussain as a lasting tribute to his courage and sacrifice. He also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured the family of all possible support.
