Srinagar | July, 11: An Over Ground Worker (OGW) was on Saturday detained at the Nunwan base camp in Anantnag on Saturday after an automated Facial Recognition System (FRS) flagged him at a security checkpoint.
The security alert was triggered at an X-ray screening point, prompting immediate interception. Police identified the individual as Mohd Iqbal Wani, a resident of Hajin in Bandipora district. Subsequent verification confirmed his status as an OGW, and he was taken into custody for further investigation.
In a statement issued here on Saturday Police said that interception shows effectiveness of advanced surveillance technology integrated into the pilgrimage’s multi-layered security grid. According to the police, the FRS is significantly “enhancing real-time surveillance, strengthening access control, and enabling prompt response to potential security threats.”
Reiterating their stance on the pilgrimage’s safety, police reiterated its committment to “maintain a robust security framework for safe and peaceful conduct of Amarnath Yatra.”
