Srinagar :  The University of Kashmir (KU) on Monday celebrated the 9th World Bicycle Day with an on-campus bicycle rally themed “Cycling for a Greener Future.”

Organized by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Association of Indian Universities, the event saw enthusiastic participation from faculty, staff, students, children from the Kashmir University Model High School, campus residents, and civil society members. This collective effort aimed to promote eco-friendly mobility and fitness. Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan praised the active involvement of all participants, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in raising environmental awareness and encouraging physical well-being. She urged attendees to adopt cycling as a sustainable transportation option and a healthy lifestyle choice. The rally was officially launched by Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal from the Allama Iqbal Library, with participants cycling through the scenic campus, including Naseem Bagh. Prof. Naseer Iqbal emphasized the dual benefits of cycling, noting its role in enhancing physical fitness while also reducing carbon emissions and conserving resources. He encouraged the community to incorporate cycling into their daily routines, especially in light of national austerity measures. Dr. Surjeet Singh, Coordinator of DPE&S, welcomed participants and outlined plans for future bicycle rallies and awareness programs aimed at promoting active lifestyles and environmental sustainability. The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony at DPE&S, recognizing the enthusiastic participation of all involved.
