Srinagar: This week, four major infrastructure developments have marked a significant push towards connectivity and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Centre approving key tunnel projects on NH-244, promising all-weather access, improved regional integration, and a boost to strategic and hydropower corridors across the Union Territory.
1. Centre Clears Rs 9,779 Cr Tunnel Projects On NH-244: In a major boost to infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Government has approved tunnel projects worth Rs 9,779.42 crore on National Highway-244. The decision was taken by the Public Investment Board (PIB) on a proposal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity in Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, and Anantnag districts, ensuring smoother and safer travel.
2. Sudhmahadev–Dranga Tunnel To Enhance Udhampur Connectivity: The Centre has approved construction of the 12.85-km twin-tube Sudhmahadev–Dranga Tunnel in Udhampur district under NH-244. The project will be executed under EPC mode and is aimed at reducing travel time and improving all-weather connectivity. Officials said the tunnel will help ease traffic movement and provide a reliable route in areas prone to weather disruptions.
3. Singhpora–Vailoo Tunnel To Link Kishtwar With Anantnag: The 38.61-km twin-tube Singhpora–Vailoo Tunnel connecting Kishtwar with Anantnag has been approved by the Centre, marking a major step in bridging Jammu and Kashmir regions. The project is expected to strengthen regional integration, improve access to remote areas, and boost economic activity across both districts.
4. NH-244 Corridor To Serve As Alternate To Landslide-Prone NH-44: Officials said the NH-244 corridor will act as a crucial alternative to the Srinagar-Jammu Highway (NH-44), which frequently faces disruptions due to landslides, especially near Ramban. The new alignment, planned under the Prime Minister’s Development Package announced by Narendra Modi, will also support upcoming hydropower projects and enhance disaster resilience in the region.
