Srinagar: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Afghanistan on Friday evening, sending tremors across Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley. The quake occurred at 21:42:57 IST at a depth of 150 km, with coordinates 36.398° N latitude and 70.878° E longitude, according to official data.
Residents reported brief but noticeable shaking, prompting many to rush outdoors as a precaution. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
“People were startled as the ground shook for a few seconds. Everyone rushed out of their homes as a precaution,” said a resident of Srinagar’s Lal Chowk area.
An official from the Disaster Management Authority said, “Although the epicentre was in Afghanistan, the tremors were felt across the valley. We are monitoring the situation closely and advising residents to remain calm.”
Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone, and such tremors highlight the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited.
