Pahalgam( Anantnag): In a move aimed at protecting the fragile ecology of the tourist resort, authorities have enforced a strict ban on the use and distribution of polythene in Pahalgam, with enforcement teams conducting inspections and awareness drives across the town.
The ban has been implemented by the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) as part of ongoing efforts to control plastic pollution and maintain environmental sustainability in one of Kashmir’s most visited tourist destinations. Officials said the initiative is intended to reduce non-biodegradable waste and preserve the natural beauty of the hill station.
Authorities said the increasing use of polythene bags in markets and tourist areas had become a growing concern, with plastic waste frequently found scattered along roadsides, in forested areas and near water bodies. The accumulation of such waste not only affects the scenic appeal of the area but also poses a serious threat to wildlife and the fragile ecosystem.
Officials said the ban has been enforced with immediate effect, and strict monitoring has been put in place to ensure compliance. Enforcement teams have been deployed in various market areas where regular inspections are being carried out to check the use and sale of polythene bags.
Shopkeepers and vendors have been directed to stop the use and distribution of polythene and instead switch to eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth and paper bags. Authorities said traders have been informed about the ban and advised to cooperate in its implementation.
Signboards announcing the ban are being installed at prominent locations across the town to inform residents and visitors about the restrictions. Tourists entering the hill station are also being informed about the ban at entry check posts to discourage them from carrying polythene into the area.
An official from the PDA said multiple measures have been put in place to enforce the ban and create awareness among the public.
“Our teams are on the move and market checking is being done. Sign boards are being installed, tourists are informed at the check post itself. Awareness campaigns and sanitation drives are being regularly conducted,” the official said.
Authorities said awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate people about the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment and the importance of keeping tourist destinations clean. The campaigns are aimed at encouraging both locals and visitors to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
Sanitation drives have also been intensified in and around tourist areas to remove accumulated waste and maintain cleanliness. Officials said regular cleanliness drives are being conducted to ensure that the area remains free from plastic waste.
Officials warned that strict action will be taken against violators, and anyone found using or distributing polythene will face on-the-spot fines. Polythene found during inspections will be seized, and repeat offenders may face stricter penalties under the rules.
Authorities said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable tourism and ensure that the natural environment of Pahalgam is preserved for future generations. They emphasized that reducing plastic waste is essential to maintaining the ecological balance of the area.
The PDA has urged residents, traders and tourists to cooperate with the authorities and follow the ban in letter and spirit. Officials said continued monitoring and enforcement will be carried out in the coming days to ensure full compliance.
The ban is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste in the area and contribute to maintaining the cleanliness and environmental health of Pahalgam, a destination known for its scenic landscapes and ecological importance.
