Srinagar : The University of Kashmir on Monday held a felicitation ceremony to honor Prof Shafi Shauq, a former professor and prominent Kashmiri litterateur, who received the Padma Shri award from the Government of India for his significant contributions to education and literature, particularly in the preservation and promotion of the Kashmiri language.
The event was organised at the Main University campus, attended by senior university officials and faculty members, celebrating Prof Shauq’s distinguished academic and literary career. Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan praised Prof Shauq for embodying the principles of interdisciplinary education long before they were formalized in the National Education Policy 2020. She emphasized his substantial contributions to Kashmiri language and literature and expressed pride in the university’s role in nurturing such talent, which reflects positively on the institution’s achievements, including its NIRF rankings and NAAC A++ grade. Prof Shauq expressed gratitude towards the university, describing it as a nurturing family that recognized his dedication. He shared his journey since joining the university in 1978 and highlighted his commitment to lexicographical work, inspired by the renowned scholar George Abraham Grierson. Other speakers at the ceremony, including Dean Academic Affairs Prof Shariefuddin Pirzada and Registrar Prof Naseer Iqbal, acknowledged Prof Shauq’s lasting impact on Kashmiri language studies, which has influenced generations of students and researchers. The proceedings were conducted by Dr Ashfaq Zarri, Special Secretary to the Vice Chancellor, who reflected on the inspirational legacy of the Padma Shri awardee. The ceremony not only celebrated Prof Shauq’s achievements but also reinforced the university’s commitment to fostering excellence in education and literature.
