Srinagar : Commemorating the foundation day of the Election Commission of India, established on 25th January 1950, the 16th National Voters Day (NVD) was Sunday celebrated across all districts of Kashmir division with great enthusiasm and civic spirit.
The National Voters Day is observed annually on 25 January to create electoral awareness amongst citizens and encourage their active participation in the democratic process. The celebrations this year revolved around the theme “My India, My Vote”, with the powerful tagline “Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy”, underscoring the central role of voters in strengthening the democratic fabric of the nation.
Across the division, various awareness programmes, pledge ceremonies, and outreach activities were organized to highlight the importance of informed and ethical voting.
At Kulgam: The 16th National Voters’ Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at KulgamSunday, where a grand function was held at the New Conference Hall of the Mini Secretariat. Dedicated to voters, the National Voters’ Day (NVD) 2026 theme is “My India, My Vote–Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy.Since 2011, January 25 has been celebrated annually as National Voters’ Day to commemorate the foundation day of the Election Commission of India.Addressing the gathering, the ADC KulgamViqarAhmad Giri, congratulated the people on the occasion and highlighted the significance of National Voters’ Day.He emphasized that the right to vote empowers citizens to exercise their democratic franchise for nation-building and strengthening democracy.He also lauded the pivotal role played by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other election functionaries in ensuring a robust and transparent electoral process.Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy District Election Officer (Dy DEO), Bashir Ul Hassan added that every single vote is vital in government formation and urged citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly, realizing the power vested in them.On the occasion, best-performing officers and BLOs were felicitated with certificates and mementos in recognition of their outstanding contributions.The programme also featured captivating cultural performances by artists, who enthralled the audience through a thought-provoking drama highlighting the importance of voting.During the function, a pledge ceremony and mass singing of “Vande Mataram,” the national song, was also held.
At Kupwara: The 16th National Voters’ Day was celebrated Sunday with great zeal and enthusiasm at various locations in Kupwara district.The main function was held at Town Hall, Kupwara, in the presence of Deputy Commissioner (District Election Officer) Kupwara, Shrikant Suse, and SSP Kupwara, Syed Al-Tahir Gilani.Also present were ADC Kupwara, CEO Kupwara, Tehsildar Kupwara, election section officials and students.This year, the theme of the event is “My India, My Vote” with the tagline, “Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy”.A video message from Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, was also screened during the event.The Deputy Commissioner administered the Voters’ Pledge to participants, including officers and students. In his address, he highlighted the significance of voting in democracy and citizens’ role in strengthening the nation’s democratic fabric. He encouraged youth, particularly first-time voters, to actively participate in the electoral process.ADC Kupwara and CEO/ Nodal officer SVEEP also emphasised the importance of National Voters’ Day during the event.Students from BHSS Kupwara presented a cultural programme highlighting the importance of voting in democracy.An award ceremony was also held and appreciation certificates given to students and participants by the District Administration.National Voters’ Day was also marked in Handwara subdivision, presided over by ADC Handwara, Javed Naseem Masoodi, at Town Hall Handwara. SDM Lolab, Mudassir Ahmad, chaired an event at GDC Sogam. At Mini Secretariat Tangdar, Tehsildar Karnah, Mohammed Amin Bhat, led proceedings, stressing the event’s significance.Similar events were also held at AERO level and NVD pledge was administered.
At Shopian: The District Administration of Shopian celebrated the 16th National Voters’ Day with enthusiasm at the Mini Secretariat, aligning the event with the 2026 theme, “My India, My Vote.” The program was presided over by ADC Shopian, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz, who emphasized the importance of voting as a fundamental aspect of democracy. He called for active and informed participation from citizens, particularly youth and first-time voters, and commended the Election Department and its officials for their commitment to inclusive elections, urging continued efforts to ensure that no voter is left behind. The event began with a welcome address by Dy. DEO Shopian, Shakoor Ahmad Dar, who underscored the significance of National Voters’ Day in fostering electoral awareness and the Election Department’s role in maintaining free and fair elections. SDM Zainapora, Bilal Ahmad, also spoke on the day’s importance in reinforcing democratic values. A National Voters’ Day Pledge was administered, with participants committing to uphold democratic principles and promote ethical voting. A notable aspect of the program was the recognition of first-time voters, encouraging their active involvement in the democratic process. Additionally, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were honored for their essential contributions to voter registration and awareness, while Election Department officials were acknowledged for their exemplary efforts in facilitating electoral activities and implementing voter education initiatives. The event was attended by various officials, including the Chief Education Officer of Shopian and all Tehsildars, highlighting a collective commitment to enhancing electoral participation in the district.
At Pulwama: District Administration Pulwama organized a significant event at Government Degree College (Boys) to celebrate the 16th National Voters’ Day, focusing on enhancing electoral awareness and participation among citizens, especially youth and first-time voters. The theme for this year, “My India, My Vote,” underscores the Election Commission of India’s dedication to fostering citizen-centric electoral processes and promoting inclusive democracy. The event commenced with the National Anthem, establishing a patriotic atmosphere. District Election Officer (DEO) Dr. Basharat Qayoom emphasized the importance of National Voters’ Day, celebrated annually on January 25 since 2011, to honor the foundation of the Election Commission of India. He encouraged eligible citizens, particularly the youth, to register and engage actively in the democratic process. Dr. Qayoom acknowledged the crucial role of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in maintaining the electoral roll’s accuracy and credibility, which he described as the backbone of the electoral system. He also noted the increased voter turnout in Pulwama during recent elections, reflecting heightened democratic awareness and public trust. The Deputy District Election Officer highlighted initiatives by the Election Commission aimed at improving electoral roll accuracy and enhancing voter services. The event included cultural performances that illustrated the significance of voting in a democracy. Additionally, the DEO administered the Voters’ Pledge, encouraging participants to commit to voting freely and fairly, devoid of bias or discrimination. Mementos and certificates were awarded to various electoral officials and volunteers for their exemplary contributions in previous elections, while students who participated in cultural performances were also recognized. The program was attended by various dignitaries, including the Senior Superintendent of Police and representatives from civil society, educational institutions, and youth organizations, emphasizing a collective commitment to strengthening democratic values in the community.
At Bandipora: The 16th National Voters’ Day–2026 was celebrated with enthusiasm in Bandipora district, themed “My India, My Vote.” The main event took place at the Auditorium Hall of N.M. Higher Secondary School, Kaloosa, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Indu Kanwal Chib, alongside various officials, youth, and students. The program began with the National Voters’ Day Pledge, emphasizing a collective commitment to democratic values and informed electoral participation. Deputy Commissioner Chib highlighted the significance of National Voters’ Day as a celebration of democracy, aimed at motivating youth and first-time voters to engage in elections. She acknowledged the efforts of Booth Level Officers, Anganwadi workers, and election staff in maintaining free and fair electoral processes. ACR Shabir Ahmad Wani underscored the importance of electoral literacy in strengthening democracy, sharing district-level statistics on voter registration and the need for ongoing awareness of voting rights. The event included various awareness and cultural activities, such as student speeches on voting importance, a skit titled “My India, My Vote,” a patriotic song, and a documentary showcasing voter awareness initiatives. Newly registered voters received Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICs), and mementos were awarded to BLOs and officers for their contributions to election duties. In a welcome address, Deputy Chief Education Officer Dr. G.M. Pujoo emphasized the role of National Voters’ Day in fostering informed and responsible citizenship. Similar celebrations occurred at Dak Banglow Sumbal, where Electoral Registration Officer Murtaza Ahmad Sheikh focused on achieving 100 percent EPIC coverage and enhancing voter participation. The day was also marked in Sub Division Gurez, led by SDM Mukhtar Ahmad, who highlighted the importance of every vote, particularly among youth and first-time voters, and administered the Voters’ Pledge to reaffirm commitment to democratic values.
At G’bal: Deputy Commissioner Jatin Kishore, also serving as the District Election Officer, led a ceremony to celebrate the 16th National Voters’ Day (NVD) in Ganderbal. The event was attended by various district officials, emphasizing the importance of encouraging new voters to engage in the democratic process. Kishore highlighted the theme “My India, My Vote” and the tagline “Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy,” underscoring that active citizen participation is vital for the strength of India as the world’s largest democracy. He reiterated that voting is both a fundamental right and a constitutional duty, urging citizens to exercise their vote responsibly. The Deputy Commissioner expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm shown by new voters and young citizens, noting their awareness of the significance of voting. He stressed the collective responsibility of voters to make informed choices, which leads to better governance and societal outcomes. Kishore acknowledged the Election Commission of India’s efforts to enhance electoral awareness and transparency through initiatives like the SVEEP program and technological advancements that improve accessibility and public trust in the electoral process. The Assistant Commissioner Revenue reflected on the historical importance of National Voters’ Day, encouraging youth to participate actively in democracy and use their voting power to foster societal progress. The event included speeches from students who emphasized the transformative impact of voting and the role of youth in shaping the nation’s future. A felicitation ceremony followed, where the Deputy Commissioner honored newly registered voters by distributing EPIC Cards and recognized the contributions of students, Booth Level Officers, and election staff for their exemplary performance throughout the year.
At Anantnag: The Election Department of Anantnag, in partnership with various local departments, commemorated the 16th National Voters’ Day at Government Degree College (GDC) Women’s Anantnag. This year’s theme was “My India, My Vote,” accompanied by the tagline “Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy.” The event featured speakers from different institutions who emphasized the significance of voting and the electoral process, advocating for increased public participation to elect governments that prioritize the welfare of the people. Cultural programs showcasing patriotism, electoral rights, and local folk traditions were performed by students, adding a vibrant element to the celebration. The Chief Guest, Additional District Development Commissioner Sandeep Singh Bali, underscored the importance of timely registration on the electoral list and the necessity of mass participation in voting. He highlighted the constitutional significance of voting and its critical role in enhancing participatory democracy. At Baramulla: The 16th National Voters’ Day was celebrated in Baramulla with the theme “My India, My Vote,” focusing on enhancing electoral awareness and encouraging participation among young and newly registered voters. The event featured a voters’ awareness rally led by Assistant Commissioner Revenue Baramulla, Arshad Ahmad Khan, alongside Deputy District Election Officer Ab Rehman Bhat and Deputy Chief Education Officer Iftakhar Ahmad. The rally, which included active participation from students and officials, concluded at Akber Chowk. A main function was held at the Main Meeting Hall of the DC Office, where new EPIC cards were distributed to newly registered voters. The Voters’ Pledge was administered by the ACR, emphasizing the commitment to democratic values among the new electors. Various activities, including quiz competitions, nukkadnatak, and painting contests, were organized to raise awareness about the importance of voting among students. Key speakers, including the ACR, Dy DEO, and Dy CEO, underscored the importance of youth engagement, voter education, and ethical voting as essential components of a robust democracy. Budgam: The 16th National Voters Day was celebrated in Budgam on January 25, marking the foundation of the Election Commission of India. This year’s theme, “My India, My Vote,” was highlighted during the main event at Sheikh-ul Alam Hall, chaired by District Election Officer Dr. Bilal Mohi-ud-din Bhat. He emphasized the significance of the right to vote as a means for citizens to contribute to nation-building and strengthen democracy. The day served as an opportunity to engage new voters for enrollment in electoral rolls, underscoring the importance of every vote in government formation. Dr. Bhat commended the efforts of Booth Level Officers and other field staff for their dedication during the recent bye Assembly elections in Budgam, recognizing their role in ensuring a transparent electoral process. He stressed the importance of the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and Voter Information Slip in facilitating voter participation and maintaining the integrity of elections. During the celebrations, various officials, including the Chief Electoral Officer of Budgam, took a pledge to participate in the electoral process fairly and contribute to national strength through voting. Similar events were held across multiple government offices in the district, where pledges were taken to honor National Voters Day. Additionally, painting and essay competitions were organized in schools, with significant student participation, further promoting awareness and engagement in the democratic process.
