Snow, Rain, Travel Advisories Issued for J&K

Srinagar: Minimum temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir showed slight improvement on Saturday, although cold conditions persisted. The weather department has predicted rain and snowfall in the coming days, coinciding with the start of Chillai Kalan, the harshest winter period, beginning December 21 and lasting until January 31. This period is followed by Chillai Khurd and Chillai Bacha, which extend into early March.
Reports said that fresh snowfall was reported in various areas, including Warwan Valley and Zojila Pass, while temperatures in the Kashmir Valley improved slightly. Pulwama recorded the coldest night at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, with other areas like Shopian and Pampore also showing increases in minimum temperatures. Srinagar city experienced a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, a notable rise from the previous day. In the Jammu region, night temperatures generally increased, with Jammu city recording 9.3 degrees Celsius. Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil also saw minor temperature increases. The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate snowfall in higher reaches and rain in the plains from December 20 to 21, with additional snowfall expected in the following days. An advisory has been issued for potential moderate to heavy snowfall in certain districts, urging travelers to adhere to traffic and administrative guidelines to ensure safety. The onset of Chillai Kalan is known for its severe winter conditions, which, while challenging for daily life, also attract tourists to the region’s snow-covered landscapes.
