Ganderbal : The School of Education at the Central University of Kashmir celebrated National Education Day on Tuesday, marking the 137th birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of Independent India.
In his keynote address, Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani emphasized Azad’s pivotal role in shaping the modern education system in India, particularly through the promotion of essential skills such as communication, creativity, critical thinking, scientific attitude, and entrepreneurship among students. He noted Azad’s significant contributions, including the establishment of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1956, and highlighted his efforts in fostering a more educated society. Prof. Geelani also drew parallels between Azad’s educational vision and the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020), advocating for the continuation of Azad’s legacy in modern education. Students from various departments participated by delivering speeches that reflected on Azad’s contributions and their relevance to NEP-2020. Additionally, a quiz program was organized to evaluate students’ understanding of NEP-2020, conducted by Assistant Prof. Dr. Gawher Ahmad Bhat and research scholar Manas Ranjan Das.
