Ganderbal : The Dean Students Welfare (DSW) and Health Centre at the Central University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, and supported by Sun Pharma and the Save Brain Initiative, observed World Stroke Day with a health check-up and lecture session titled “Every Minute Counts.”
The event aimed to raise awareness about strokes, their causes, prevention strategies, and the critical importance of timely medical intervention to save lives and minimize disability. During the health check-up camp, participants received consultations from Dr. Showkat Hassan, a prominent neurologist and Nodal Officer for the Stroke Thrombolysis Programme. Dr. Hassan explained that a stroke is characterized by a sudden neurological deficit lasting over 24 hours due to vascular issues, distinguishing between ischemic strokes, which account for 87% of cases, and hemorrhagic strokes, which make up about 13%. He presented alarming statistics, noting that over 80 million people were affected by strokes globally in 2016, with an incidence rate in India of 119–145 per 100,000 population.
