Srinagar : The Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather on Tuesday accepted a private resolution from PDP MLA Mir Fayaz, which seeks a one-time exemption for consumers from outstanding electricity tariff dues.
Reports said that the resolution aims to alleviate the financial burden on households facing rising power costs and frequent billing disputes. It will proceed to a ballot procedure in the upcoming Assembly session to determine if it will be included in the Assembly’s calendar for a vote.
In the context of the J&K Assembly, following the 2024 elections, the National Conference (NC) holds 42 seats, the BJP has 29, Congress has 6, and the PDP has 3, among others. The Congress party has opted to support the NC government from outside rather than joining it. Two assembly seats, Nagrota and Budgam, have recently become vacant. The Nagrota seat was won by Devender Singh Rana of the BJP, who passed away on October 31, 2024. The BJP has nominated his daughter, Devyani Rana, for the upcoming by-election. Meanwhile, the Budgam seat became vacant after Omar Abdullah resigned to represent Ganderbal, having won in both constituencies during the 2024 elections. The NC has nominated Aga Syed Mehmood for Budgam and Shamim Begum for the Nagrota by-election. The Election Commission has scheduled voting for both seats on November 11.
