Srinagar | : To commemorate World Environment Day 2025, the Department of Tourism, Hospitality & Leisure Studies (DTHLS) at the University of Kashmir, in partnership with the Pahalgam Development Authority and the Pahalgam Trade & Civil Society Alliance on Monday hosted a daylong event focused on sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship in Pahalgam.
Speaking on the occassion Muhammed Saleem Beg, the Chief Guest and former Director General of Tourism J&K, underscored the critical need for environmentally sensitive development, systematic planning, and collaboration among multiple stakeholders. He praised the efforts of KU’s Department of Tourism in preparing young professionals to lead the tourism industry towards sustainability. Pirzada Fayaz, Convenor of the Responsible Tourism Society of India, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in promoting green practices within tourism. Advocate Nadeem Qadri, an environmental lawyer and Executive Director of the Wildlife Conservation Fund, called for the implementation of responsible tourism measures to protect Kashmir’s delicate ecosystems. Additionally, Mushtaq Pahalgami, President Himalayan Welfare Organization, highlighted the necessity of balanced development in Pahalgam, ensuring the preservation of both its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Dr. Reyaz Ahmad Qureshi, Head of DTHLS, expressed the department’s dedication to developing human capital, conducting impactful research, and engaging in policy discussions to integrate sustainability into tourism development. The event also showcased cultural elements, including traditional performances such as rouf and ladishah, along with a student skit, all reinforcing the themes of eco-conscious travel and sustainable lifestyles.
